Whether due to a sports injury or a cavity, it is not uncommon to lose a tooth in any area of your mouth. It is important to replace missing teeth to restore function and esthetics and maintain the remaining teeth.
Luckily, our dentists are prepared for situations like this. By making a small incision in the gum tissue, our dentists can insert a single dental implant to substitute the missing tooth’s root structure. In fact, a quality dental implant can improve a patient’s speaking and chewing ability, stabilize surrounding bone and tissue, and boost their overall self-confidence.
A posterior healing cap is placed over the implant during the healing process to protect the site until it is ready for a dental crown. This healing cap (or healing abutment) helps the gum tissue to mature before the replacement tooth can be fitted. In the anterior region, a temporary crown or temporary retainer is made while the implant is healing, so no one has to walk around with a visibly missing tooth. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Once the underlying bone is healed and fused to the implant, our dental surgeon will remove the temporary healing cap and replace it with a permanent abutment and a crown. The end result leaves you with a natural-looking dental crown that restores the function and beauty of your smile!
