What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure in which we remove infected or damaged pulp inside a tooth, thoroughly disinfect the root canals, and seal the tooth to prevent reinfection. Root canal therapy is often necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to decay, damage, or internal trauma. Fortunately, timely treatment can prevent severe pain, abscess formation, and even tooth loss. In cases where the infected tooth cannot be saved, the next best option is often a tooth implant.

The Root Canal Treatment Process

The Root Canal Treatment Process

Here at Van Dyke General and Implant Dentistry, we prioritize patient comfort and utilize the latest dental technology to perform root canal treatments efficiently and effectively.

Step 1: Examination & Preparation

First, our team will take X-rays of the affected tooth and surrounding areas to assess the extent of the infection. Following the X-rays, we administer local anesthesia to numb the area, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Finally, a small rubber dam is placed over the tooth to keep the treatment area dry and bacteria-free during the procedure.

Step 2: Removing The Infection

Next, our dentist carefully creates a small opening in the tooth’s crown. Through this opening, they’ll gently remove any damaged or infected tissue from the tooth’s pulp and root canals. After removing the infected pulp, the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to eliminate bacteria and reduce the risk of reinfection. Then, the canals are shaped in preparation for filling.

Step 3: Filling & Sealing The Tooth

After the infection has been fully cleaned and the canals have been shaped, we fill the empty spaces to support the tooth’s structure and prevent future infections. A temporary filling is then placed over the opening to seal the tooth. This temporary filling acts as a protective barrier until the permanent crown is placed.

Step 4: Crown Placement

In most cases, a custom dental crown is necessary to restore strength and function to the treated tooth. When a dental crown is required, we will take impressions of your teeth, and a temporary crown will be placed while a custom-made permanent crown is being crafted. Once the permanent crown is ready, we will remove the temporary fillings and secure the custom crown in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Do You Need A Root Canal?

Root canal therapy may be required when the tissue inside the tooth becomes infected or damaged. This can result from decay, trauma, fractures, or periodontal disease. Left untreated, infections and decay can lead to severe tooth pain and the development of an abscess, which can spread to the jawbone and become a serious dental emergency.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From A Root Canal?

Most patients experience only mild discomfort after a root canal, and recovery usually takes less than a week. You may need to avoid hard or chewy food for a few days following the procedure and take over-the-counter pain medication if necessary. If you have any questions about the recovery process, our dentist will happily answer them during your visit.

How Much Is A Root Canal?

The exact cost of a root canal can vary depending on factors such as the location of the tooth and the complexity of the procedure. Your dental insurance may cover part of the cost, so it’s a good idea to contact your provider for more specific details regarding coverage.
