BOTOX® is more than a cosmetic cure for aging skin—this neuromodulator also blocks or reduces nerve impulses associated with muscle contraction. Because of this ability, this powerful injection can be used to address pain caused by TMJ disorder or bruxism.
Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, is primarily a stress response. To cope with anxiety, patients with bruxism unconsciously grind their teeth together, chipping their enamel and leading to discomfort. Luckily, medical BOTOX® harnesses the effects of botulinum toxin Type A to provide relief from headaches, ear pain, jaw soreness, or tension. Additionally, a small dose of this botulinum toxin can weaken the muscles in your jaw to prevent involuntary teeth grinding and clenching.
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder produces similar symptoms to bruxism. This disorder, if not caught early, can lead to facial pain, constant headaches, and tension in the neck or shoulders.
